Day Twenty

Day Twenty: Brazil

With just over a week to go, the finish line is in site. It seems like only a couple of days ago that the riders started this challenge, although I’m not sure they would say the same! The 28 day long charity challenge for MSF is coming into the final stages now, the team so far have put in a monumental effort and today was no different, with a total distance of 1927KM. The big total was helped by another Saturday group ride, with 7 of the team getting out together on a hilly 100km. We also had a few other people do their own 100km totals, so all in all a good day. As we finish the 3rd week, it will be interesting to see how we’re doing coming into the final stretches of the journey. What day are you expecting us to finish?

We’re still in Brazil today, one of the most interesting and bio-diverse places in the world, we need to swim and row down the length of the amazon river before we can hit the beaches and go surfing.

Surfing

Brazil’s love of beaches and oceans has helped many people enjoy the surf lifestyle. Over the last 5 years, Brazilians have notched up four world titles in Surfing Championships, more men’s championship tours wins than any other country and a big wave record – making them one of the most successful surfing nations in the world.

Surfing is the sport of riding waves in an upright or prone position. Surfers capture the moment generated from waves to glide across the surface of the water until the wave breaks. Its technically challenging and hard work, which is why you very rarely see an unfit surfer.

The Amazon Rainforest

Quite possibly one of the most famous locations in the world, the Amazon rainforest is so iconic for good reason. In the Amazon, the worlds largest remaining tropical forest and the largest river basin on the planet, you will find one in ten known species on Earth. There are over 34 million people living in the Amazon including 385 indigenous groups, including several tribes who have never had contact with the outside world. Its worth remembering, the amazon isn’t just in Brazil, the epic biome stretches over eight different countries: Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana/ France.

Hosted by the Rainforest, the Amazon river is the second longest river in the world. It’s estimated that 1/6th of all freshwater that drains into the world’s oceans comes from the 320km-wide delt of the Amazon, where it drains into the Atlantic. The Amazon is an epic Rainforest, integral to not just the health of Brazil but the whole world.
