Beginners guide to the gym: My first class

Taking the plunge and attending your first class might seem daunting. You may be questioning your ability, asking yourself questions like, am I fit enough? What happens if I don’t know what I’m doing? Or be worried that you won’t know anyone there. Luckily for you, we’ve followed Gemma on her first class at Elevate to give you the low down on what to expect.

Choosing a class

I decided to try the 5:15 pm Tuesday Strong class as it looked like a good opportunity to try out a wide range of equipment.

Upon arrival

Upon arrival, I was shown the changing facilities (which are lovely). I then sat in the reception area and got chatting with the other members whilst we waited for the rest of the group to arrive.

The class

It was nice to arrive a bit early to get chatting with the other members as this made starting the class less daunting. We started with a warm-up and then got ourselves into pairs, which for a first-class was great as I didn’t feel alone.

Before we began the main exercise, Dan (the trainer) went through how to use each piece of equipment and demonstrated the right and wrong way to use it. This was extremely helpful as I had no clue!

As I had hoped, throughout the class we got to use kettlebells, the Sled, dumbbells, the log, landmine and D-Ball, all equipment I’ve seen around gyms before but have never been confident enough to use or even know how to use it.

With the small class sizes, Dan was able to keep an eye on everyone and ensured we all had good form and that we were using the appropriate weights. As it was my first session he selected the weights for me at each station which was super helpful.

Overall thoughts

As a whole, it was a positive experience. I pushed myself and enjoyed the class environment. Everyone was very friendly and encouraged me when pulling the Sled at the end.

It was great to not have to try and come up with a workout myself as I often struggle with knowing what I’m supposed to do and tend to lean towards the cardio machines as a comfort zone. However, in the Strong class, I found I was able to use a wide variety of equipment, which kept it fun. I also really enjoyed working out in the group environment with people of all ages and abilities, it made for a fun atmosphere.

We think the best way to find out is by giving it a go for yourself. Come see what its all about by booking your first class via the link below:
