Hatha Yoga explained

With so many types of Yoga available it can be confusing and maybe a little scary not knowing exactly what you are letting yourself in for when you sign up for a class. A general Hatha Yoga class is often simply called “Yoga” and pertains to movement of the body with focus on the breath. It is a broad term that encompasses many styles and “brands” of Yoga. The way it is delivered depends on the personality and style of the teacher, and the training they received.

Ok.  But what does Hatha actually mean?

The term Hatha comprises of two Sanskrit words: Ha (Sun) and Tha (Moon). These represent opposites coming together to create the “whole” in a way that honours the concept of necessity of opposites. Movement and Stillness is a good example.  Hatha Yoga contains both flowing sequences such as sun salutations and static holds making it a balanced form of exercise.  There are poses that require lots of physical effort and some poses that require none.  Experiencing both the effort and movement make the stillness and ease even more enjoyable and allow the body to deeply relax.

I’m still confused.

Don’t worry. The good news is that you do not have to know everything about Yoga to enjoy the benefits. Get booked in. Let the teacher lead you.  “Letting go” of your worries and fears in order to try something new or difficult is a big part of the practice.  There is no greater satisfaction than conquering a fear, expanding your physical boundaries and topping it all off with the deepest relaxation. There is no greater disappointment than denying yourself the opportunity.
