What is Pilates

My personal Pilates mantra is that it makes you “move better, look better, and feel better.” Pilates is an exercise program that emphasizes proper postural alignment through movements aimed to build core strength and improve muscle balance.  Increased muscle strength and tone, improved flexibility, balanced muscular strength on both sides of the body, improved posture, and increased body awareness  are just a few of the benefits of regular Pilates practice.

The founder, Joseph Pilates, created the program in the 1920’s, specifically as a way for injured dancers, athletes and soldiers to return to exercise and maintain fitness.  Since then, Pilates has evolved to suit people in the general community.

My own journey

My personal journey with Pilates started about 8 years ago. I was a personal trainer at a gym,  and my coworker was working on her student teaching hours to complete her Pilates certification course.  She needed “students” to practice on, so I volunteered.  Up to that point I had never done Pilates nor did I know much about it, but after my first session with her I was hooked.  I loved how after only one session my body felt supple and strong!  I started taking regular group Pilates classes a few times per week, then decided that I wanted to become an instructor to share the power of Pilates with everyone else.

I have always been into various forms of fitness programs, including HIIT training, weightlifting, and running but what I love about Pilates is that it both strengthens and stretches the body.  All major muscle groups are worked in a balanced fashion because of the precise movements. A typical Pilates workout includes a number of exercises and stretches, including proper breathing techniques and abdominal muscle control. Each exercise has a prescribed placement, rhythm and breathing pattern.

I love seeing the positive physical changes Pilates has had on me, clients,  and students who take classes with me regularly.  The best part is that Pilates is designed for everyone from beginner to advance, and those of all fitness levels!

Our Pilates classes take place every Monday at 5:15pm & Thursday at 10:00am so if you’d like to join us for a class then click the link below:
