A Beginners’ Guide To The Gym: What to expect

The doors to Elevate opened early last year in February 2020. As a modern and inclusive studio located in Werrington, Peterborough our mission is to provide a comfortable place for people of all ages and abilities to train, whilst ensuring our members gain the knowledge they need to empower them on their journey.

A bit about us

Our fitness studio in Peterborough is geared up for all abilities, this includes beginners. We believe keeping active can have a big impact on how we feel and on our mental well-being. However, we also understand that the thought of setting foot in a gym can be daunting and fear we want to help you overcome. We are proud of the community we are building at Elevate, our members are welcomed with a supportive atmosphere which is encouraged by our unique, classes-only approach.

Why Elevate is a great option for beginners

Coming to the gym can be intimidating. Not knowing where to start, how to use equipment, or just unsure of what you want to do. That’s why we believe our classes are a great way to kickstart your efforts.

We like to keep our class sizes small, this way we can spend more time ensuring everyone has got the techniques down, particularly those just starting out. For the more experienced, we are always on hand to provide more support and help push those who we know can work that little bit harder. You’ll get to use a wide range of equipment during our sessions, often using something that you might have dismissed if training alone. We’ve found that this opens up a whole new range of exercises you wouldn’t have otherwise tried, making training more varied and fun.

At Elevate we think tracking your physical activity as a beginner is a great idea. Tracking your workouts allows you to see how hard you’re working. You can accurately measure the calories you burn, along with your heart rate, helping you to get more out of your workouts. We do this using the MyZone fitness belt. You may have seen us sporting it in a few photos on our social media already. If you think it would help your training, you can purchase one by emailing us: info@elevatefitnessuk.com

Choosing the right class for you

As a class-based only gym, you’ll need to book your session first. All our classes are appropriate for beginners, as we can tailor the session to the people in the class on the day. In every class we will always take into account your ability and most importantly with what you feel comfortable doing.

So, if you’ve never used the equipment mentioned, don’t let that put you off. Clear and easy to follow instructions are given during each class! Our trainers Dan, Foxy, Josh and James are friendly and are here to help you get the most out of each session. You can learn a bit more about our trainers here: https://bit.ly/OurElevateTrainers

Our classes

The five classes we offer are: Elevate, Accelerate, Strong, Olympic Weightlifting and WOD (Workout of The Day), which we have broken down for you below. You can also find more information on our classes page here: https://bit.ly/OurElevateClasses

Elevate: This is a big functional circuit. In this class you will get to use a wide range of equipment. Including sled, slam balls, Bulgarian bags, kettlebells, ski-erg and the rower. This class is a great combination of strength, power and fitness.

Accelerate: Our cardio-based class. This session will help you to build up your stamina and increase your speed. Usually working for 30 seconds or more. In this class, you can expect to use a range of equipment including the rower, static balls, ski-erg, light weights and a bit of running too.

Strong: Increase your strength, power and endurance with this class through loaded and progressive exercises that will challenge your body. During this class, we will use the sled, dumbbells, barbells and kettlebells to improve technique in your key and primal movements.

Olympic Weightlifting: Learn the art of Olympic weightlifting. A discipline that consists of 2 main lifts; the clean and jerk, and the snatch. Both lifts require strength, power and mobility and are an addictive way to lift weights.

WOD: Our unique workout of the day can help you build on power, strength and fitness. This will be based around sets of repeated exercises or doing one exercise for a specific time before moving to the next. It will be a mix of body weight and loaded exercises, with frequent use of kettlebells.

Our Wellness Classes

As well as those classes, we have recently introduced a new range of Wellness and Movement classes to our options at Elevate, in our brand new Yoga studio. These can be booked individually and are also included as part of our class pass packages. To book one of our wellness classes please visit: https://bit.ly/OurWellnessClasses . Yoga: A relaxing session led by Gemma Skells and Joanna. This class focuses on encouraging slow, mindful movement and breathing techniques. No matter your age or battle scars, everyone is welcome, and everyone can benefit.

Body Revive: Led by Ian Tennant, an award-winning sports and movement therapist. This class will focus on a range of movements that you won’t commonly find in day-to-day life. Helping you to improve your range of movement, balance and coordination.

Pilates: Our Pilates classes are led by Christy Vasquez. They focus on controlled movements to build a strong core. As a result, the body is trained to properly activate muscles and increase muscle endurance. In addition, one can expect to burn calories, improve muscle tone, balance, posture and flexibility. The consistent practice of Pilates also manages lower back pain and rehabilitation of injuries. Move better, look better, feel better.

What to expect when you first come to Elevate

When you arrive at Elevate, you’ll be greeted by our team who will show you around our studio. You’ll find it unlike any other gym in Peterborough! We have put together a virtual tour so you can have a look before you come too. Which you can find here: https://www.elevatefitnessuk.com/the-studio/.

It’s always nice to arrive a few minutes early as our members enjoy having a chat and it’s a great opportunity to get to know a few people, which we hope will help you to feel more at ease during the session. If you don’t have time to chat beforehand there’s always time after the class to catch up too.

Our reception area is where we like to socialise. With comfortable chairs and a fridge stocked with a wide range of tasty bites and refreshing drinks, it’s a great place to sit and wind down after a session. We also offer a selection of energy-boosting juices, so why not pick one up before your class for that little extra kick.

Before or after a session at Elevate feel free to make use of our changing rooms. We took extra time designing them ensuring they have that luxurious feel. Our large showers, secure ‘pin code’ lockers and GHD styling tools allow you to feel right at home.
